Introduction
Bio-remodelling injections have been the aesthetic product of the year since their launch in 2022 in Australia. Their huge popularity and surge in demand amongst clients have resulted in it repeatedly being out of stock, with the supplies and clinics across Australia selling out of the injections.
This Italian injection (sorry I can’t give it’s name for legal reasons, though it is complimented by the near identically named cream – Profhilo Haenkenium) was originally launched in 2015 in Europe and since then has won a whole host of awards across the world. Thankfully we now have it here in Australia.
So why are these bio-remodelling injections so popular?
What makes this product so unique is that it delivers the most concentrated amount of hyaluronic acid (64mg in a 2ml injection) compared to all the other injectable products on the market, and it was developed using a newly patented method that makes it more stable and spread further within the dermis to activate all the skin layers. As you would expect with that much hyaluronic acid you get a great hydration and beautiful glow, but it does so much more too.
It is a unique product that is said to ‘bio-remodel’ the skin and give a remarkable rejuvenated effect. It stimulates all the layers of the skin, and most notably the collagen and elastin, which are responsible for elasticity and firmness of the skin.
From just 5 facial injection points on each side it spreads to cover the whole face, then works as a bio-stimulant across all the facial layers – skin, elastin, collagen, fat and bone. All these layers are stimulated to gradually produce firmer, tighter skin with a lifted effect and a smoothing of fine lines.
By 2 months you should see a noticeable effect and after 2 to 3 treatment sessions you will see significantly lifted, smoother skin. This injection works on improving the condition of the skin, rather than improving volume, like a regular dermal filler.
In addition to the skin it can be injected to the neck, the decolletage and any other place on the body that you feel needs skin rejunivation, tightening and lifting.
How have people described this product?
“Liquid gold for your skin”
“The future of skincare”
“Spreads like honey across all the dermal layers”
“An innovative breakthrough treatment and has even been heralded as a ‘cure for wrinkles.”
“The ultimate glow giver.”
What awards has it won?
What’s the difference between Profhxlo and dermal fillers?
Profhxlo and dermal fillers are both made from moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid. Though when I inject dermal fillers they are volumise the skin and stay in a single place. They work instantly to plump up the skin. Skin boosters on the other hand are purely designed to add hydration without the volume.
Profhxlo works differently. There is something unique about the combination of low and high molecular hyaluronic acid and the stability of the product that allows it to spread far and wide in the skin (hence it is likened to honey) and then bio-activate and stimulate all the layers.
So you see an initial hydration of the skin, then at one month you start to really see the magic. It lifts, it tightens, skin looks smoother and it triggers the body’s own, natural, anti-ageing processes. In addition, Profhxlo does not contain synthetic additives, such as BDDE, which minimises the risk of side effects and heightens it’s anti-inflammatory properties.
Both fillers and bio-remodelling have their benefits, though the treatments work in very different ways from each other.
What is Profhxlo made of?
Profhxlo is made from a combination of 50% pure, high grade low weight hyaluronic acid and 50% pure, high grade high weight hyaluronic acid. A patented technique was used to combine the two weights, in a different manner to usual hyaluronic acid (HA) preparations, and what resulted is a product that has bio-stimulating properties in addition to its hydrating effect. In a 2ml syringe there is a total of 64mg of hyaluronic acid, greater than other HA injectables available.
HA has classically been desired as an injectable because it is a naturally occurring polymer which the body uses to keep cells hydrated and well supported. Around 50% of the body’s hyaluronic acid is found in the skin. One of the roles of HA is to act as a scaffold for your skin’s cells and it also plays an important role in protecting the skin from sun damage. As we age, our levels of HA decrease and this contributes to ageing symptoms, such as sagging skin.
Regular dermal fillers often contain any synthetic additives, such as BDDE (1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether) which is a chemical which is cross-linked (or bonded) to hyaluronic acid to slow the rate at which the body breaks it down. This bio-remodelling injection has no additional additives. This makes the product unique and reduces its risk of hypersensitive reactions to the treatment, and it also enhances it’s anti-inflammatory effects.
What happens in the consultation?
You’ll start off with a consultation about what your hopes and expectations are for your treatment. Then we’ll discuss your medical history to ensure that you are suitable for the injections. If you are happy to proceed then you can receive the injections during the consult.
A consent form will be signed, photo’s for record keeping will be taken and you will be seated on a treatment bed. Your skin will be cleaned and prepped, then the areas for injection will be marked out.
Usually bio-remodelling injections involve a series of 10 injections (5 to each side of the face) of 10 injections distributed over the neck. Other areas, such as the decolletage, chest, stomach, arms, hands, knees and legs can also be injected.
After the injections the skin will once again be cleaned and a little pressure applied over the injection sites. Once the procedure is finished you will be provided with aftercare information.
How many treatments will I need?
Bio-remodelling injections are first performed they are usually done as a course of 2 or 3 treatments. After that, most people will opt for maintenance injections every 6-12 months.
After the first treatment, you usually have your next injections after 4 weeks, and then if needed, a 3rd lot can be performed. usually after 6 months
Additional treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers can be used to compliment the effect.
Bio-remodelling injection aftercare
If you went about your normal life and forgot you had had the injections, the chances are you would be absolutely fine. But here’s a few specific bits of information:
At home care:
– Relax. You don’t need to do anything special. No massage, no special creams, no funny facial expressions. Just do what you would normally do on a chilled out day.
– You will feel a little tender, so you can apply a cool compress to the treatment area (do not apply ice directly to the skin) for 10 minutes every half an hour as needed. Usually this doesn’t need to be repeated after the first day, but you may do so if it feels comfortable for you.
– The product is injected in small blebs under the skin. You may see these little blebs initially, but they settle usually within a few hours, sometimes sooner. It may be possible to feel the product where it has been injected under the skin. Don’t worry this will settle, there is no need to massage.
Things to avoid:
– Avoid any heat inducing activities for 24 hours such as strenuous exercise, spas, saunas and hot showers as it increases the likelihood of bruising.
– Ideally avoid using make-up for 12 hours after treatment.
– Alcohol increases your risk of bruising so please avoid for 24 hrs prior to treatment and for 24 hrs after treatment.
– Avoid facial massages for 24 hours.
– Avoid facials, waxing, chemical peels, skin needling, microdermabrasion, IPL or laser treatments to the area of treatment for 2 weeks after treatment. – Avoid sunbathing for 14 days (and of course also use SpF30 or above daily). Also avoid any other extreme heat or cold for 14 days post treatment.
– If possible avoid aspirin for 12-48 hours after treatment. (Please discuss this first if you take regular aspirin).
– If you are taking any other medications, such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen or Diclofenac, Fish Oils, Omega 3 Fatty Acid, Garlic, High Dose Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and Ginseng please consider avoiding for a week prior and a week following a treatment. Otherwise please discuss first with Dr Lindsay.
Severe side effects to be aware of:
Whilst there have been no reported cases of severe side effects to the bio-remodelling injections that are used, I wish to make you aware of a rare, potential side effect.
AS WITH ALL INJECTIONS OF HYALURONIC ACID THERE IS THE RISK OF A VASCULAR OCCLUSION. IF YOU DEVELOP ANY SYMPTOM OF A VASCULAR OCCLUSION, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IMMEDIATELY. SYMPTOMS WILL INCLUDE SEVERE PAIN OR PAIN GREATER THAN EXPECTED FOR THE INJECTION, DISCOLOURATION OF THE SKIN WITH MOTTLING AND PROLONGED BLANCHING OF THE SKIN, OR DISRUPTED VISION OR WEAK EYE MUSCLES.
IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR DEVELOP ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS, PLEASE CONTACT DR LINDSAY IMMEDIATELY. A VASCULAR OCCLUSION NEEDS URGENT ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT.
Treatment Follow Up
For optimal results bioremodelling treatment requires 2 treatments 4 weeks apart. Some people may opt for a 3rd treatment after an additional 6 months. Profhxlo works gradually to remodel the skin so the results are not immediate. The final result will take about 8 weeks to show after your initial treatment, but it will be worth the wait!!
The treatment is not permanent and gradually your body will resorb the product, you will still benefit from the skin’s stimulation.
The effects should last for 6 to 9 months. Hence to maintain the effect, a maintenance treatment once or twice a year is recommended.
