Fat dissolving injections involve the injection of deoxycholic acid into targeted areas to break down and absorb fat cells. The first 24–48 hours after treatment are crucial for proper care and optimal recovery.

Care in the First 24–48 Hours

  • Gently cleanse the treated area with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid harsh chemicals or exfoliating products for at least 48 hours.
  • Minimise exposure to heat sources such as hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or sunbathing, as these can increase swelling and discomfort.
  • Refrain from consuming alcohol and avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements unless specifically instructed otherwise.
  • Opt for loose-fitting clothing that does not compress or rub against the treated area.
  • Refrain from engaging in strenuous exercise or activities that may increase blood flow to the treated area. Light activities such as walking are generally acceptable.
  • If instructed, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the treated area for short periods to help reduce swelling.
  • Drink plenty of water to help flush out the released fat and aid in the elimination process.

Early Side Effects

After fat dissolving injections, it is common to experience some early side effects. These are generally temporary and subside within a few days to a couple of weeks:

  • Swelling: The treated area may appear puffy. Swelling usually subsides within a few days but may persist for up to two weeks.
  • Redness or bruising at the injection sites — typically resolves within a few days
  • Tenderness or soreness to the touch — sensitivity is expected and should improve over time
  • Temporary numbness or tingling — usually resolves within a few days or weeks
  • Itchiness or mild skin irritation at the injection sites
  • Small nodules or lumps — result of fat cells being broken down, generally resolve as the body absorbs the treated fat

When Will You See Results?

Results from fat dissolving injections vary based on individual response and the area treated. It's not an instant fix — the body takes time to metabolise and eliminate treated fat cells. Initial changes may appear within a few weeks, but full effects may take several weeks to months. Multiple sessions may be needed, and the size of the area, amount of fat, and individual factors all affect the rate of fat reduction.

Important Reminders

  • Fat dissolving injections are not a weight-loss treatment
  • They are most effective for localised areas of stubborn fat in people near their goal weight
  • Maintaining a stable weight after treatment helps preserve results
