Fat dissolving injections (also known as lipolytic injections or deoxycholic acid injections) are a non-surgical treatment for localised fat reduction. They work by disrupting the fat cell membrane, causing the fat cells to break down and be naturally eliminated by your body over several weeks.
How Do They Work?
The active ingredient — most commonly deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally produced by your body — is injected directly into the targeted fatty area. It disrupts the integrity of the fat cell membrane, causing it to dissolve. Your lymphatic system then clears away the debris over the following weeks.
Results are gradual but permanent — the treated fat cells don't return, provided you maintain a stable weight.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
- Double chin (submental area)
- Jowls and lower face
- Bra fat / back fat
- Inner thighs
- Stomach pouches
- Upper arms (bat wings)
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
Most patients need between 2 and 4 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Each session involves multiple small injections into the target area. The total number of sessions depends on the size of the area and your individual fat distribution.
What to Expect After Treatment
Swelling, redness, and mild tenderness in the treated area are normal and expected — they're actually signs the treatment is working. Most swelling resolves within 1–2 weeks. Full results are typically visible at 6–12 weeks after your final session.
Is It Right for You?
Fat dissolving injections are best suited to people who are at or near their goal weight but have localised pockets of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise. They are not a weight-loss treatment and are not appropriate for large areas of excess fat.
