One of the great advantages of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers is that they are reversible. If you're unhappy with a previous filler result — whether from another clinic or a previous treatment with Dr Lindsay — hyaluronidase (Hyalase) can dissolve the filler quickly and safely.

What Is Hyalase?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It occurs naturally in the body and has been used safely in medical settings for decades. When injected into an area of HA filler, it breaks down the gel structure of the filler, allowing it to be absorbed and cleared by the body.

When Might You Need Dissolving?

Common reasons patients seek filler dissolving include:

  • Overfilling — too much product creating an unnatural look
  • Migration — filler has moved from its original placement site
  • Asymmetry or uneven result
  • Lumps or nodules
  • Vascular compromise — a rare but serious complication requiring urgent treatment
  • Simply wanting to return to a more natural appearance

The Dissolving Process

Hyalase is injected into the treated area using a fine needle or cannula. The enzyme works rapidly — most of the filler will dissolve within 24–48 hours. You may need more than one treatment to fully dissolve heavily filled areas.

Dissolving can cause temporary swelling and bruising — often the area will look swollen immediately after treatment before settling.

Can You Have New Filler After Dissolving?

Yes — but Dr Lindsay typically recommends waiting at least 4 weeks after dissolving before re-injecting. This allows any residual swelling to resolve and gives you time to decide on your next steps with a clear picture of your natural baseline.

A Note on Safety

Hyaluronidase is a prescription medication in Australia and should only be administered by a qualified medical professional. Dr Lindsay is an experienced GP with specialist cosmetic training and holds appropriate prescribing authority for all medications used in her clinic.
