Lip dermal fillers are among the most requested cosmetic treatments — and also among the most misunderstood. When done well, they create beautiful, natural-looking enhancement. When overdone, they produce results that most patients specifically want to avoid.
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) gel injections that add volume, shape, and definition to the lips. HA is a substance naturally found in the body, making it biocompatible and reversible. If you're unhappy with your result, the filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase (Hyalase).
What Can Be Achieved?
Depending on your goals and anatomy, lip filler can:
- Add overall volume to thin lips
- Define and sharpen the lip border and Cupid's bow
- Improve symmetry
- Smooth vertical lip lines (smoker's lines)
- Gently turn up the corners of the mouth
- Restore lip volume lost with ageing
How Much Filler Is Used?
For most patients, 0.5–1 ml is appropriate for a first treatment. Dr Lindsay follows a conservative, gradual approach — it's always possible to add more at a review, but overfilling produces an unnatural result. The "duck lip" or overly projected look almost exclusively results from too much filler placed incorrectly.
Does It Hurt?
Topical anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment. Many HA fillers also contain lidocaine, which provides additional numbing during injection. Most patients find lip injections tolerable, though the lips are a sensitive area — anticipate some discomfort.
After Treatment
Swelling is normal and expected — lips can appear significantly larger for 24–72 hours before settling to the final result. Bruising is possible, particularly around the lip border. Final results are typically visible at 2 weeks, at which point a review with Dr Lindsay is recommended.
How Long Do They Last?
Lip fillers typically last 6–12 months. The lips are a high-movement area, which tends to break down filler faster than other sites.
